Fascism

Quoting Newt Gingrich:

I think there is a gay and secular fascism in this country that wants to impose its will on the rest of us, is prepared to use violence, to use harassment.

Does anybody here know what fascism actually is?  Let's go ask the dictionary shall we?

A political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

So let's run through this real quick:
  1. There is no homosexual nationalist movement to the best of my knowledge
  2. The movement that exists is supporting individual liberties
  3. The movement is not centralized or autocratic
  4. The movement has no backing in government
  5. The movement has no leader, let alone a dictator
  6. There is no economic or social regimentation of any kind
So other than this movement having nothing in common with fascism it's exactly like fascism.

As to the rest of his comment, if there's anybody who's using violence and harassment here it is those who are attacking gay people.  What we've seen, largely speaking, has been peaceful demonstrations and boycotts of businesses.  Has there been any violence?  Has there been anybody assaulted, murdered, etc, because they were against homosexuality?  Where as there's a long and colorful history of people doing precisely that to gay people.

Do know of a list of *companies* that donated money to do in civil rights in CA (I've lost track of if that was a yes or a no vote)?

The only one I've seen makes no distinction between individual and company donations, and I think it's REALLY out of line they are calling for boycotts of places where individuals work who donated that the company may be non-political or even on the other side. The company cannot (and should not) be able to do anything about such donations--while I understand why the employers name is requested, I also think it's not all good, since the employer has no control over what its name is associated with.

On the other hand, I'd really like to know which corporations made corporate donations--those I feel no qualms about making my spending decisions with that information as an input.

Yeah that element of it really bothers me. There was a specific thing I heard about where a restaurant in LA is being boycotted. Why? Because the manager is a mormon and donated $100 to go against prop 8. Not the OWNER. The manager. Said manager apparently ended up leaving town because they were being harassed.

The reality is I very much doubt many corporations actually did donate. Why would you? It can only cost you business. Corporations are usually very hesitant to get into politics because, inevitably, you're always pissing off somebody who buys your product.

But yeah, I'd totally boycott a company that was involved in this.

Personally, if you take the word fascism out of it, he's probably right.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE THE SHOE ON THE OTHER FOOT MOTHERFUCKER?

(directed to Newt, not you, of course)

I think this picture from the thread on fark.com says it all:

(Newt, not you.)

I'd tell you what the gay agenda is, but my gay friend won't let me poke through his Blackberry. *sigh*

Uh, clearly two people Newt doesn't know who want to get married outside of his church is a violation of his religious freedom. That's just obvious.
