Obama, Clark, and McCain

So if you hadn't heard, Wes Clark got everybody in the political world in an uproar because he went after McCain. To be fair, I'll post the video clip here so you can see his full statements in context before I comment:

Okay, so a couple quick points:
  1. Nothing Clark says is in any way false or misleading
  2. Clark does not in any way attack McCain's record of military service.  In fact he commends it, calling McCain a hero
Having said that, I think Clark made a mistake here.  While the contents and facts of what he said here are wholly legitimate, the way he said it just looks bad.  He ends up spending a large chunk of the interview having to laud McCain to avoid being tarred a swiftboater (which ends up happening anyhow). Also, whatever he says about McCain's military service, the obvious followup by any interviewer is to point out that Obama doesn't have any military service.

Obama distanced himself from the comments, and rightly so.  I think what Clark said wasn't out of bounds or any kind of smear, but I think it was poorly delivered.  This confirms for me my conclusion about Clark.  He'd make an awesome president but he's not good at politics.
